Ads Just Moved Into the Answer Box
For thirty days, ads inside ChatGPT answers were nearly invisible. A rounding error. Then, in a single day, they were everywhere.
Recent tracking found ad penetration jumping from a fraction of a percent to double digits overnight, then climbing further. Roughly half of US responses now carry a sponsored placement somewhere inside the answer.
This changes the shape of the page you’re fighting for.
Getting cited used to mean one thing: earn a spot in the model’s answer through real content, real authority, real relevance. That fight still matters. But now the answer itself has a second occupant. A brand that pays gets a guaranteed slot next to the brands that earned theirs.
You cannot out-earn a paid placement. It does not compete on merit. It competes on budget.
What you can control is the other half of the answer. The organic citation still carries more trust than an ad, and most users know the difference. A cited source inside the explanation reads as evidence. A sponsored line reads as a pitch. Your job is to make sure your business is the evidence, not absent entirely while a competitor buys the pitch slot next to your silence.
This also raises the cost of doing nothing. An answer with no ad and no citation from you was already a missed opportunity. An answer with an ad from a competitor and no citation from you is worse. Now the model actively points a user toward someone else while you stay invisible in the same breath.
Watch your category’s prompts closely over the next few months. Ad rollout on this scale rarely stays flat. It expands into new categories fast, and pricing pressure on ad slots will follow. Brands that already hold a strong earned citation will weather that expansion better than brands starting from zero.
Earn your spot in the answer before the paid seats fill up around you.
