The Worst Thing the Model Can Say About You Is Nothing

Founders worry about AI saying something bad about their company. They should worry more about it saying nothing.

If you started your business recently, you’re not in the model’s training data. It has no memory of you. So when a customer asks “what is your company,” the model does something reasonable: it runs a quick search to ground itself, reads whatever it finds, and answers from that. If it finds two or three sources saying roughly the same clear thing about you, it answers with confidence. If it finds one thin source, or three sources that contradict each other, the honest answer becomes “I don’t really know this brand.”

And “I don’t know them” is fatal. The customer doesn’t pause to investigate. They move to the option the model does know. You weren’t rejected. You were skipped, because you didn’t exist clearly enough to be considered.

This inverts an old instinct. We’re trained to think the home page is the center of the universe, the one page that must be perfect. To a model grounding itself on you, your home page is just one source, and a self-interested one. What it really wants is corroboration: independent places on the web that describe you, and describe you consistently. Two or three sources agreeing is worth more than one beautiful page asserting.

So the question for a new brand isn’t “is my website good.” It’s “if a model spends four seconds learning who we are, what does it find, and does the story hold together?” Often the answer is messy. One source calls you a consultancy, another a SaaS tool. One lists an old tagline. A directory has the wrong category. None of it is a lie, exactly, but together it doesn’t add up to a brand the model can summarize. So it doesn’t.

The fix isn’t volume. You don’t need to be everywhere. You need a small number of credible, independent places to tell the same simple, true story: what you do, who it’s for, why you’re different. Get three sources aligned on that and the model can answer the grounding question cleanly. That’s the difference between being recommended and being skipped.

The hard part is that you can’t see the grounding happening. The model runs that little search silently, every time someone asks. You only see the outcome, in customers who never arrive.

beket.ai runs those grounding questions for you, across every major model, and shows you exactly what the machine learns when it tries to figure out who you are, so a new brand can become a known one on purpose.
