AI Overview
Google's AI-generated summary that appears above traditional search results, synthesizing information from multiple sources into a direct answer.
AI Overview (formerly Search Generative Experience / SGE) is Google’s AI-generated summary box that appears at the top of search results pages for many queries. Instead of returning a list of links, it synthesizes a direct answer from multiple sources — often citing 3–5 websites inline.
How it works
Google’s AI Overview pulls from indexed web content and uses a large language model to generate a coherent response. Sources cited in the overview receive a visible link, but organic results below the overview may see significantly reduced click-through rates.
Impact on visibility
Brands not cited in AI Overviews for their target queries face a new form of invisibility. Even ranking #1 organically may not translate to visibility if the AI Overview answers the query without requiring a click.
Optimizing for AI Overview
- Write content that directly answers specific questions
- Use clear headings, concise paragraphs, and factual specificity
- Build domain authority so Google’s model weights your content as trustworthy
- Use structured data to help Google parse your content context
