Answer Engine

A system that responds to a query with a direct, synthesized answer rather than a ranked list of links — for example ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews.

An answer engine is any system that returns a direct answer to a question instead of a list of links for the user to evaluate. Answer engines synthesize a response from one or more sources and often cite a small number of them inline.

How they change discovery

Traditional search engines hand the user ten links and let them choose. Answer engines make the choice for the user, collapsing the result into a single response. “Ranking” is replaced by “being the answer” or “being cited inside the answer.”

Examples

  • ChatGPT (with browsing/search)
  • Perplexity
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
  • Bing Copilot
  • Brave AI answers

Why it matters

If an answer engine resolves a query without a click, visibility depends entirely on whether your brand is named or cited in the answer — not on where you would have ranked.
