AI Search Doesn't Know Your Business Is Canadian

Ask an AI tool for the best plumber in Calgary. Or the best accountant in Halifax. Watch it name a national chain instead of the local shop three blocks away.

This happens because AI models learn from what’s loudest on the web. American content dominates that web. A Canadian business with a thin online footprint loses to a US competitor with ten times the mentions, even in a search that should favour the local name.

The fix isn’t different from AEO anywhere else. But it needs more effort here, because the signal is thinner.

Start with your directory presence. Google Business Profile matters more in Canada, not less, because fewer competing signals exist to drown it out. Fill in your hours, your service area, your photos. Keep it current. An AI model checking your business against other sources notices when your profile agrees with everything else it finds.

Claim your listings on Canadian directories too, not just the global ones. A mention on a Canadian chamber of commerce site or an industry association page tells the model something a global directory can’t: that you actually operate here.

Use structured data on your website. Mark up your address, your hours, your service area with schema. This helps any search engine, but it matters more when your business competes against companies ten times your size for the model’s attention.

Write content that answers the specific questions your customers ask, in the specific way they ask them. “Best plumber near me” gets asked in Calgary the same way it gets asked in Cleveland. But “how much does a new furnace cost in Ontario” is a question only a Canadian business can answer well. Specificity is your advantage. Use it.

If you serve French-speaking customers, publish in French too. Bilingual content isn’t just accessibility. It’s a second set of citations, in a language pool with far less competition than English.

And check what the models actually say about you. Ask ChatGPT and Gemini who they’d recommend for your service in your city. If they get your hours wrong, your service area wrong, or skip you entirely, you have a gap to close, not a mystery to solve.

Being Canadian isn’t a disadvantage in AI search. Being invisible is.
