Brand Mentions Are the New Backlinks for AI Search

Ask ChatGPT about your industry. See who it names. Chances are, it isn’t you.

AI tools don’t invent their answers from nothing. They pull from what the web already says. Every article, forum post, and podcast mention feeds the model. The more places say your name, the more likely the model repeats it.

This is the shift search marketers missed. Backlinks used to be the currency of trust. Now mentions are. A link helps. But even an unlinked mention on Reddit or in a trade article teaches the model who you are and what you do.

Three things make a mention count.

First, authority. A mention in a trusted publication carries more weight than one on a random blog. AI models learn to trust sources the way readers do.

Second, relevance. You want to be named in content that matches your actual business. A software company mentioned in a running shoe review teaches the model nothing useful.

Third, specificity. Vague mentions don’t help. A mention that names what you do best, and why someone should pick you, gives the model language it can reuse. Models often repeat the exact phrasing from the source. Say something clear about your product once, in the right place, and you may hear it echoed back in an AI answer months later.

So how do you earn these mentions.

Publish research nobody else has. A single sharp data point, tied to a debate your industry already has, gets cited fast.

Team up with a brand that shares your audience. Joint events and campaigns get both names mentioned together, over and over, by people who weren’t planning to write about either of you.

Feature real experts in your content. They share what mentions them. That’s not vanity. That’s distribution.

Pitch journalists and podcast hosts with something they can use, not a pitch about yourself. A quote that helps their story earns you a mention their audience will read.

Then track it. Set alerts for your name and your competitors. Check monthly. Watch which mentions move the needle on how AI models describe you.

None of this replaces a good website. But your website alone won’t get you named in an AI answer. The web around you will.
