One Question Becomes Twenty Searches Before AI Answers
You ask ChatGPT one question. It runs a dozen searches before it answers.
This is called query fan-out. The model takes your question, breaks it into smaller pieces, and searches each piece on its own. A question about “best project management software for a small team” might become searches for pricing, integrations, user limits, mobile apps, and free trial terms. Five searches, maybe more, all from one sentence.
Most businesses still write for the original question. One page, one keyword, one clean answer. That page might win the main search and lose the other eleven.
Think about what this means for a page that only covers pricing. The model asks about integrations next. Your page says nothing. The model moves to a competitor’s page that does. Your citation ends there, mid-answer, replaced by someone who covered the question you skipped.
The fix is not more content. It is wider content.
Map the real questions behind your main topic. Not just “what does this cost” but “does it work with the tools we already use,” “what happens after the free trial,” “can five people share one account.” Each sub-question deserves a real answer somewhere on your site, in plain text, easy to find.
You do not need twelve new pages. You need one page that does not stop at the obvious question. Add a section. Answer the follow-up before it gets asked. Link to the deeper page if the topic needs more room.
This also changes how you judge your own content. A page that ranks well for its main keyword can still lose most of an AI answer to a competitor who covered the fan-out questions and you didn’t. Traffic numbers won’t show you this gap. Only checking the actual AI answers will.
Search fans out because a real question is never really one question. Your content should fan out with it.
beket.ai checks what AI models ask about your business behind the scenes, then shows you exactly which follow-up questions your site fails to answer.
