SEO Isn't Dead. But the Thing It Was Optimizing For Is.
People have been declaring SEO dead for years. They’ve always been wrong. SEO adapted to every algorithm change, every SERP redesign, every new feature Google introduced. The fundamentals — good content, clean structure, relevant links — kept mattering.
This time feels different.
Google just announced the biggest change to Search in 25 years. Links are being deprioritized. AI agents are doing the browsing. Search results are becoming interactive experiences generated on the fly. The thing SEO was built to optimize for — ranking highly in a list of links — is being retired.
So what does this mean for SEO?
The honest answer is that nobody fully knows yet. But a few things are clear.
What still matters
Technical SEO — maybe more than before. How your site is structured, how clearly it communicates what you do, whether you have an llms.txt file, how your schema markup describes your business — all of this shapes how AI models understand you. You’re not optimizing for a ranking algorithm anymore. You’re optimizing for comprehension.
Content — but the goal shifts. The question used to be: will Google rank this page? The new question is: will AI models absorb this information and use it to describe my business accurately? That’s a different brief. It rewards clarity and specificity over keyword density.
What probably doesn’t matter as much
- Click-through rate optimization
- Meta description tweaking for traffic
- Building links purely for ranking signals
These were tactics for a world where the goal was a click. If there’s no click, the tactic loses its purpose.
The deeper shift
SEO was always about one channel — Google. What’s emerging now is something broader: AI presence management. Making sure that every major model — Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini — has accurate, complete, consistent information about your business.
That’s not SEO. It’s something new. And the agencies that figure it out first will inherit the clients who built their businesses on the old game.
