Stop Optimizing the Things That Don't Move the Needle

There’s a predictable pattern whenever a new channel appears. People rush past the boring fundamentals to chase the clever trick, because the trick feels like an edge and the fundamentals feel like homework.

AI visibility is deep in that phase right now. The clever tricks are things like special machine-readable files you add to your site to “tell the AI what you are.” They get written up, brands add them, everyone feels they’ve done something. And the honest read from people who actually measure this is that these files do almost nothing for whether you show up in answers. They’re for pointing automated tools at your API. They are not a ranking lever.

Meanwhile the things that genuinely decide whether a model can use you are dull enough that nobody blogs about them excitedly.

Like: can the machine actually read your page? A surprising number of sites serve a near-empty shell first and load the real content with JavaScript a moment later. A human’s browser fills it in. The crawler that feeds the AI often doesn’t wait around, and walks away with nothing. Your best page becomes invisible, not because the writing was weak, but because the words weren’t there when the machine looked.

Or: are you accidentally turning the machine away at the door? Aggressive bot protection and an over-zealous robots file can block the exact crawlers that supply AI answers. You spend months making content worth citing, and a config file you forgot about quietly forbids anyone from reading it.

Or, simplest of all: is the true thing actually written down in plain text, in the first chunk of the page, where a machine can grab it in one pass? Not implied by a chart. Not buried in a video. Stated.

None of that is exciting. All of it matters more than the file-of-the-week.

The reason people get this backwards is that fundamentals are invisible when they work and the tricks are visible whether they work or not. You add the trendy file and you can see you added it. You serve clean HTML and… nothing happens, because nothing was supposed to happen, it just quietly works. So attention flows to the trick.

Resist it. Before you chase any AI visibility hack, confirm the unglamorous baseline: your content is real HTML, it loads without JavaScript gymnastics, you aren’t blocking the crawlers, and the important claims are written in plain words up top. That’s most of the game.

beket.ai checks whether the models can actually read and use your pages, and shows you where the boring, decisive problems are, so you fix what moves the needle instead of what’s trending.
