Zero-Click Search
A search interaction that ends without the user clicking through to any website, because the answer is delivered directly on the results page or inside an AI answer.
A zero-click search is a query that the user resolves without visiting a website — the answer appears in a featured snippet, knowledge panel, or AI-generated summary. A large and growing share of searches now end this way.
Why it’s accelerating
AI Overviews and answer engines are designed to satisfy the query in place. The more capable they become, the fewer clicks reach the underlying sources — even when those sources are cited.
Implications
- Ranking #1 no longer guarantees traffic if the answer is shown above your link
- Visibility increasingly means being named or cited in the answer, not just listed
- Brand mentions inside answers can build awareness even without a click
What to do
Optimize to be the cited source, and ensure the information shown about you is accurate — because an inaccurate zero-click answer can cost a customer before they ever reach you.
