More Links in AI Answers Do Not Mean More Visits
AI answers now show more links. Your traffic may still fall. Both facts are true at once.
In September, one AI search tracker measured how many AI Overviews held an external link inside the answer text. From August 25 to September 10, the share sat near zero. On September 11 it jumped. By September 20 it reached 26.2%.
That sounds like good news. It is not the whole story.
Not every link leaves the search page
Some underlined words inside an AI Overview now open AI Mode. They do not open a website. The user stays on the search page and asks the next question there.
Google’s own counting rules hide this. A click on an external link in an AI Overview counts as a click. A link that runs a new search counts as nothing. No click. No impression.
Search Console added an AI Overviews and AI Mode report on August 31. It shows impressions only. It shows no clicks and no click-through rate. You cannot divide one report by the other and get a real number.
So a rising link count tells you one thing. A display became more common. It does not tell you anyone visited you.
The traffic numbers point the other way
A 2026 study of a large publisher network tracked where pageviews came from. The trend is plain.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Google Search, year-over-year change (2024–25) | −21.9% |
| Google Search, year-over-year change (2025–26) | −40.2% |
| Google Discover, year-over-year change (2025–26) | −34.3% |
| Google Search share of pageviews, July 2024 | 9% |
| Google Search share of pageviews, July 2026 | 5% |
| Dark social share (texts, DMs), 2024 → 2026 | 7.1% → 11.3% |
| AI assistant referrals, share of traffic | 0.01% |
The search decline nearly doubled in one year. AI referrals grew 8x over two years. They still sit at 0.01% of traffic. Private sharing grew. People read the answer. Then they text a link to a friend.

The answer is the visit now
A buyer asks an AI tool about your category. The tool writes a paragraph. The paragraph names three firms. It states prices, hours, and services. The buyer reads it and decides.
Many never click. The ones who do arrive with a view already formed. The paragraph did the selling. Or it did the damage.
This changes what you measure. Clicks show a thin slice. Impressions show that a link appeared. Neither shows what the answer said.
Three questions matter more:
- Does the answer name you for the questions buyers ask?
- Are the facts about you correct and current?
- Who does the answer name next to you, and how often?
A link to a page with a wrong price does not help you. A correct answer with no link can still win the sale.
What to do this quarter
Write down 20 to 40 questions your buyers ask. Run them in each AI tool. Run them again next week. One answer is noise. A pattern is data.
Check each answer against your real business facts. Mark every wrong price, old address, and missing service. Fix your own pages first. They are the part you control.
Track the trend each month. Do not wait for a click column that may never come.
