Unbranded Prompts

Test queries that describe a need or category without naming your brand, used to measure whether AI assistants mention you when the buyer doesn't already know you.

Unbranded prompts are the questions you send to AI assistants that describe a problem, category, or use case without naming your brand — for example, “What’s the best tool for scheduling social posts?” They measure whether an AI surfaces you when the person asking has never heard of you.

Why it matters for AI

Unbranded prompts test the top of the funnel, where discovery happens. When a buyer asks a category question, the AI names a short list — and being on that list is how new customers find you through tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, Claude, and Gemini. A strong branded answer means little if you never appear in the unbranded ones.

Practical takeaway

  • Presence — Check whether you’re mentioned at all, and where you fall in the list.
  • Framing — Note the context the AI puts you in (“best for enterprise,” “budget option”).
  • Gaps — Identify category questions where competitors appear and you don’t.

Unbranded prompts pair with branded prompts, which test what AI says once it already knows your name.
