Does Bing Webmaster Tools Help ChatGPT Visibility? What's Documented and What Isn't
Short answer: probably somewhat, indirectly, and nobody can prove how much. OpenAI says ChatGPT search “sometimes partners with other search providers” and points readers to Microsoft’s privacy statement, so Bing is very likely one of the inputs. But OpenAI also runs its own crawler and its own index, and it doesn’t say how much weight any partner gets. Bing Webmaster Tools can make sure Bing has your pages. It can’t show you, or guarantee, what ChatGPT does with them.
This post sorts what is documented from what is assumed, explains what Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow can and can’t do for ChatGPT, and gives a short checklist that covers both sides.

What is documented about ChatGPT and Bing?
Here is everything we could confirm from primary sources as of October 30, 2026:
| Claim | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bing became ChatGPT’s default search experience | Announced by Microsoft in May 2023 | Microsoft |
| ChatGPT search “sometimes partners with other search providers” and sends them rewritten queries | Documented by OpenAI today; it links Microsoft’s and Shopify’s privacy policies for how those providers handle queries | OpenAI Help Center |
| OpenAI has its own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and blocking it keeps your pages out of ChatGPT search answers | Documented by OpenAI | OpenAI crawlers |
| OpenAI keeps its own web index | Documented: OpenAI describes “OpenAI’s indexed and cached web content” for offline web search in some workspaces | OpenAI Help Center |
| To be eligible for ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI’s published IP addresses | Documented by OpenAI | OpenAI Help Center |
| How ChatGPT ranks results | Not published. OpenAI says it uses “multiple factors” and “placement is not guaranteed” | OpenAI Help Center |
The 2023 announcement is the origin of the “ChatGPT runs on Bing” idea. What OpenAI documents today is more mixed: partner providers, which Microsoft is very likely among, plus its own crawler and index. Our explainer on how ChatGPT search works walks through the whole pipeline.
What is not documented, or contradicted
These claims circulate widely. None of them is confirmed by OpenAI or Microsoft:
- “ChatGPT only uses Bing.” OpenAI says “sometimes” and “other search providers”, plural. It doesn’t say how often Microsoft is used, for which queries, or in which countries.
- “If Bing hasn’t indexed a page, ChatGPT can’t cite it.” OpenAI’s own crawler and index point the other way. A page OAI-SearchBot can reach could, in principle, surface without Bing. Nobody outside OpenAI can measure how often that happens.
- “Bing rank decides ChatGPT citations.” OpenAI doesn’t publish its ranking factors. Claims about a precise link between Bing positions and ChatGPT citations rest on third-party studies or guesswork.
- “Bing’s AI Performance report shows your ChatGPT citations.” Microsoft says the report covers “Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations” (Bing Webmaster Blog). It doesn’t name the partners. Don’t read it as ChatGPT data.
You will also find single-site stories along the lines of “we set up Bing Webmaster Tools and a week later ChatGPT knew about us.” They may be true. One site with no control group can’t separate Bing from everything else that changed that week, including OpenAI’s own crawler finding the site.
Does IndexNow help with ChatGPT?
Not directly, as far as anyone has documented. IndexNow is a protocol for telling search engines a URL was added, updated or removed. Its participating engines are Amazon, Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep (IndexNow FAQ). OpenAI isn’t on that list, and OpenAI’s crawler documentation doesn’t mention IndexNow.
Even for Bing, IndexNow is a notice, not a guarantee. Bing says it “does not guarantee that web pages will be crawled or indexed” (Bing).
So the honest chain is: IndexNow can help Bing see a change sooner. If ChatGPT pulls that query from Bing, a fresher Bing index may help. Each “if” in that sentence is unconfirmed.
What Bing Webmaster Tools does help with
Bing Webmaster Tools is still worth setting up, for reasons that don’t depend on the ChatGPT question:
| What you can do | What it helps with for certain | What it may help with |
|---|---|---|
| Verify the site, submit a sitemap, inspect URLs | Bing and the products built on it can crawl and index your pages | ChatGPT, if it uses Bing for the query |
| Set up IndexNow | Bing hears about changes sooner | ChatGPT, through the same uncertain route |
| Read the AI Performance report | How often Copilot and Bing’s AI answers cite your pages, with sampled grounding queries | Ideas for which topics AI engines in general associate with you |
| Check Topics Portfolio (beta) | Opportunity queries “where other sites appear and yours does not” | Content planning beyond Bing |
| Keep Bing Places for Business current | Accurate address, hours and contact details in Bing’s local results | Local answers elsewhere, if they draw on Bing |
Our Bing AI Performance report guide covers the report step by step.
What to do: cover both routes
Because nobody outside OpenAI knows how much ChatGPT leans on Bing for a given query, cover both routes and then check the result directly.
The OpenAI route (documented):
- Allow
OAI-SearchBotin robots.txt. OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect. - Make sure your CDN, firewall or bot protection isn’t blocking OpenAI’s published IP ranges. A site can allow the bot in robots.txt and still block it at the edge.
- Keep key facts (services, prices, hours, locations) in plain text on the page. Our AI crawlers and robots.txt guide lists every bot.
The Bing route (likely, unquantified):
- Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.
- Turn on IndexNow through your CMS, CDN or plugin.
- Use URL Inspection on your most important pages to confirm Bing has indexed them.
Then check the outcome:
- Ask ChatGPT the unbranded questions your customers ask, with search on, and note whether you’re named and which pages it cites.
- In GA4, look for
chatgpt.comas a source. In a Beket AI audit export from October 29, 2026, all 107 ChatGPT citation URLs carriedutm_source=chatgpt.com, so clicks from cited links are easy to spot.
Where Beket AI fits
Bing Webmaster Tools reports on Bing’s AI surfaces. It can’t show you ChatGPT’s answers. Beket AI asks unbranded questions on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overview and records which businesses each answer names and which URLs it cites, so you can see whether the work above changed anything on ChatGPT itself. With Cloudflare connected, Beket AI also shows which AI crawlers visited your site. Beket AI’s integrations are Webflow, Google Analytics and Cloudflare.
A free Beket AI audit covers 25 prompts across 3 engines. Beket AI Pro is $49/month, re-audits daily and starts at 50 prompts across 3 engines. Run a free audit at beket.ai.
