Reddit Says Google's AI Mode Doesn't Send Traffic. What That Means for a Local Business That Gets Cited

By Nur Rysbek

Reddit threads regularly show up as sources in Google’s AI answers, as we found when we looked at whether Google AI uses Reddit as a source. On October 29, 2026, Reddit’s CEO told investors that Google’s newest AI search experience isn’t sending people back.

“The reality is, AI Mode does not drive traffic,” Steve Huffman said on Reddit’s third-quarter earnings call, as reported by The Verge. “Not for us, and not to anybody, as far as I know.”

If a site with Reddit’s reach says being cited isn’t turning into clicks, a local business should take note. Here’s what Reddit reported, what a Reddit login wall could change in the sources AI engines cite, and what to measure if your business gets named in AI answers.

What Reddit reported

The numbers come from Reddit’s Q3 2026 shareholder letter and call, as covered by Search Engine Journal and The Verge:

  • Search referrals are falling. “During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week,” the letter says. It doesn’t give the base that drop is measured from, and it doesn’t split it by search engine, Search Engine Journal notes.
  • Logged-out visitors took the hit. In the U.S., logged-out daily active uniques fell from 30.1 million in Q2 to 27.3 million in Q3, while logged-in U.S. users rose slightly, from 23.1 million to 23.4 million (SEJ). The letter says logged-out and web traffic took the biggest hit from the search decline.
  • Huffman blames Google’s AI features first. He said the biggest part of Reddit’s working theory is AI Overviews and AI Mode, which at a minimum push other results down the page. The second part is machine-translated Reddit content that he believes is ranking lower, mostly outside the U.S. Reddit hasn’t said how much of the drop it puts on each.
  • Google still wants the content. “Google is crawling us as hard as ever,” Huffman said (The Verge).
  • Investors reacted. Reddit’s stock fell more than a third in the week after the call, Search Engine Roundtable reported.
  • A login wall is coming, as a test first. Reddit will start testing a logged-in-only version of the site in select markets outside the U.S. this quarter. Neither the letter nor the call names the markets (SEJ), so there’s no word yet on whether Canada is one of them.

Being named is not the same as being clicked

Reddit’s problem isn’t that Google stopped using it. By Huffman’s account, Google crawls Reddit as hard as ever, and Reddit is still a “top search term in Google” (The Verge). What changed is how many people click through after the answer.

That’s the same gap a local business faces in AI answers, at a much smaller scale. When an AI Overview or AI Mode answer names your bakery, your law firm or your plumbing company, a lot of the job may already be done on Google’s page: the person reads your name, maybe your rating and hours, and calls or walks in later. That visit won’t show up as a referral from Google’s AI. We covered the wider pattern in what zero-click search is.

Two things follow from that:

  1. Don’t judge AI visibility by referral clicks alone. If Reddit says AI Mode isn’t sending it clicks, a 10-person business shouldn’t expect a big referral line from it either. Small AI traffic numbers can still matter, which we explained in why AI search traffic is small but still matters.
  2. Being named is the part you can still win. If the answer is where the choice gets made, the useful question is whether your business is in it, and who’s named next to you.

What a Reddit login wall could change in AI answers

Reddit says logged-in and app users already account for over 80% of its monetization, and that the login push also protects access to its data. On the call, Huffman said “the vast majority of scraping” happens through logged-out access (SEJ). He also said some version of Reddit will still be available before a hard login prompt, and that Reddit wants shared links to keep working.

So nobody knows yet how much of a thread a search crawler or a logged-out visitor will see in the test markets. Reddit has a data licensing deal with Google that dates back to 2024 (SEJ), so Google may be in a different position from other AI engines. That’s a reason to watch, not to assume.

How much would it matter for local questions? Our own audit data suggests less than the headlines imply, with one exception. We looked back at Beket AI market audits we already ran in Vancouver and Seattle between October 23 and 29, 2026. No new audit was run for this post.

Beket AI audit data (2026) Links checked Reddit links Share
Lawyers, realtors, mortgage brokers, marketing agencies (7 audits, Oct 23 to 27), Google AI Overview links in our sample 68 5 7.4%
Same audits, ChatGPT links in our sample 376 0 0%
Same audits, Perplexity links in our sample 256 0 0%
Google AI Overview re-run, Oct 28: 14 local prompts (7 per city) plus 4 longer prompts the audit added per city (all links) 136 2 1.5%
Holiday shopping questions, Vancouver, Oct 29 (all three engines, all links) 654 20 3.1%

Bar chart of Reddit's share of cited links in Beket AI local audits, Vancouver and Seattle, October 23 to 29, 2026: Google AI Overview 7.4% (5 of 68) in a professional services sample, ChatGPT 0% (0 of 376), Perplexity 0% (0 of 256), Google AI Overview re-run on October 28 1.5% (2 of 136), Vancouver holiday shopping questions across three engines 3.1% (20 of 654).

What stands out:

  • Reddit was a small share of local sources. Its highest share in any row was 7.4%. In the professional services audits, the top-cited sites were directories, regulators and business websites, as we detailed in does Google AI use Reddit as a source.
  • Google’s AI Overviews used Reddit; ChatGPT and Perplexity mostly didn’t. All five Reddit links in the professional services sample came from AI Overviews.
  • Plain “best X” service lists rarely cited Reddit. In the October 28 re-run, both Reddit links came from the longer comparison questions the audit added, not from the 12 shorter local prompts, such as “best law firms in Seattle,” that got an AI Overview.
  • Shopping questions were the exception. For Vancouver holiday shopping questions, reddit.com was the fourth most-cited domain with 20 of 654 citations, including an r/vancouver thread about a Christmas market. In Seattle, Reddit didn’t make the top 10 domains (at most 10 of 589 citations), but AI Overview cited it for “where to buy Christmas gifts in Seattle,” “unique local gift shops in Seattle for Christmas shopping” and “best outdoor gear store in Seattle.”

If a login wall makes Reddit threads harder for AI engines to read, the answers that lean on them would likely pull from somewhere else: local media, city guides, directories, review sites and business websites. For a local shop, that could cut both ways. A thread that praised you might stop being cited. A guide or a page you control might get cited in its place.

A few limits. These are single runs on single days, in categories we picked. The professional services rows come from the 100-link-per-audit sample our tool exports, not every link. Beket AI often records AI Overview links at the domain level, so we can’t always tell which thread was used. And AI answers change over time.

What local businesses should measure

Reddit’s numbers show why referral clicks alone undercount AI’s role. Measure the parts you can see:

  1. Impressions in Google’s AI features. Search Console’s generative AI performance report counts how often links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It doesn’t show clicks or the searches behind them. Our guide on how to track AI Overview traffic shows how to pair it with landing-page data.
  2. Whether you’re named in the answer, and who’s named next to you. Ask the unbranded questions your customers ask, such as “best family lawyer in Vancouver” or “where to buy hiking boots in Seattle,” and note who gets named. Run each more than once and on more than one engine. Tracked over time against competitors, that’s AI share of voice.
  3. Which sources the answers cite for your category. If Reddit threads, review sites or local guides keep showing up, those are the places where what’s said about you can reach an AI answer. If Reddit’s login test reaches your market, check whether those sources change.
  4. The signals that come after the answer. Branded searches, direct visits, calls and bookings in Google Analytics and your phone records. They won’t say “from AI Mode,” but if they hold steady or rise while referral clicks stay flat, people may be finding you in answers without clicking.

Step 2 is what Beket AI does at scale. A free Beket AI audit runs 25 prompts across 3 AI engines and shows whether your business is named and which competitors appear in the same answers. Beket AI Pro is $49 a month, re-audits daily and starts at 50 prompts across 3 engines, so you can see whether you stay in the answers if Reddit’s login test changes what AI engines can cite.
